Three Mantras to Lower Website Bounce Rate

Posted by Mercy Livi 16 February, 2009

When the internet was routed in the old age people were using it for fun, now internet has been revolutionized and users have become smart enough to find what they needed. If your website don’t provide what they look for they will simply hit back to the search engine and find some other alternative. Monitoring so called “Bounce Rate” will help you understand whether you are proving the users what they are looking for!

Bounce Rate: Bounce Rate is a term generally used with Google analytics and other analytics tools. It’s a metrics used to determine whether users are staying in your webpage or leaving just by visiting. If bounce rates are higher, the conversion rate will automatically be lower. This is a concern for every business owner where you need to put your website into design / usability evolution.

Bounce rate is calculated using the number of visitors who visit a particular page and then leave your site, without visiting any other pages within your domain, divided by the total number of visitors to the page. Bounces can occur for different reasons, such as clicking a link to a different web site, typing a new URL, and clicking the back button to leave the site. Obvious goal of your website would be low bounce rate and users / visitors hopefully digging deeper into the website to make online purchase, online purchase etc.

To lower the bounce rate, I would suggest three mantras that would help achieve good performance with the website.

1. Analyze
2. Modify
3. Achieve

Analyze:Analyze your Google analytics or any Analytics accounts stats you are using and find the below points.
Most Visited pages and keywords

  • Is the landing pages optimized for right keywords
  • Is your landing page speak user language
  • Is your landing / home page have clean layout
  • Your external marketing campaigns like email marketing etc leading visitors to home page. (Instead of to a specific landing page)
  • Modify: So, how to fix this bounce rate problem? Review the above said points and make necessary changes to lower your bounce rate.

  • Track your website with any web analytics software and analyze the results.
  • Optimize the landing pages with proper keywords
  • Determine the design architecture and make ways to contact with your customers.
  • Offer users important links in the landing page and make them engaged.
  • If visitors are interested, get feedback from their experience. This will give you solid ways to improve.
  • Test with AB Split testing and this will enable you to see which element drive the most sales.
  • Achieve: Be innovative, be analytical and pay attention to your customers and track everything. It’s not very easy to implement all those mentioned and track everything (innovative, analytical, tracking), but when we put everything in a well thought-out approach, the hard work will yield fruit and bounce rate will be considerably reduced!

    Hey,

I could say this is simple, interesting and full of insights to reflect upon. Gr8 Mercy :)

I like the point you have mentioned & specially to offer important links. In other words to engage user on the website this is an important thing to do. The more you have things to offer , the more visitor will stay in your site & thus lower the bounce rate.

Great article, thanks a lot for posting it! :-) One of my sites (my German blog) has a very high bounce rate cause the name of the blog is – unfortunately – the same name as a movie. I did not name it after the movie though. I was surprised that my blog showed up on Google’s first SERPs..even though I did not do any SEO. I think it’s because it’s blogger, which belongs to Google, and the age of my site (almost 3 years old) and the inbound links. How much does the bounce rate affect the ranking?

    @Amish, Raghavan – Thanks! :)

@Alex – A per the recent study bounce rate could affect rankings. And above all bounce rate will affect your conversions. So better keep a track!

In regards to Alex’s comment. I would worry to much if you bounce rate is high on a blog. You want to keep it low of course, but even popular blogs have bounces on the home page higher than 50%. Analyze the type of traffic that is bouncing. Are you getting a high bounce rate from new visitors or returning visitors. Look for items like that.
