Twitter Spammers Targets Eminent Search Engine Marketers

Posted by Mercy Livi 27 January, 2009

Recently there is a growing number of spam account registration in twitter. Last week Big Daddy Google’s Matt Cutts was blogging about something similar in his blog. For past few days I got significant increase in my twitter network. But the pretty saddest part is most of them are already suspended accounts! And the spammers have targeted the most prominent and eminent Search Engine Marketers to create the mirror accounts. Here comes the example.

Fake /Suspended Account URL

  • Original Account URL

  • Further analyzing their intension and act we can address this as “Follow Spam” as per Twitter terms. Follow spam is the act of following mass numbers of people, not because you’re actually interested in their tweets, but simply to gain attention, get views of your profile (and possibly clicks on URLs therein), or (ideally) to get followed back.

Such profiles will be following hundreds of peoples and obvious no one would be following the profile. And there will not be any update in the profile too. One best example will be @Marketing101. Fellow twitters have reported this as spam. In couple of days this account may also be suspended. For reference I have provided a screen capture.

    Twitter Spam

You can report spam accounts following @spam. Let’s keep twitter spam free and make it as a wonderful micro blogging platform.

Yes very true mercy, twitter is been used for spamming but the saddest and funniest part is sometimes non spammers are also getting punished in this segment. You can check out Matts blog post regarding twitter spam account and comments on the posts :)

    Best regards

@ Raghavan – Thanks and yes the list grows day by day. (_) the underscore magic rolls out btw in twitter!

@Jag – Thanks for stopping by and agree with you that for some unknown reasons twitter punishes non spammers also in mean time.
